The Magistrates’ Association supports magistrates through guidance on sentencing, training, representation and advice. It has also published ‘Costing The Earth – Guidance for Sentencers’ (PDF, 172 pages, 2.1MB), which gives guidance to Magistrates on sentencing for environmental legislation.

Part of the Cabinet Office, HMSO (Her Majesty’s Stationery Office) provides access to a wide range of Government Information. All UK legislation is now published on-line on this site, with past Acts from 1988 onwards available as well as other secondary legislation.

The Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM), is the professional body which represents over 5,500 waste management professionals. It offers advice, training, technical services, publications and news on waste and related issues.


CABE Space aims to bring excellence to the design, management and maintenance of parks and public space in our towns and cities. Established in 2003, it is part of CABE, the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment, which champions the quality of our buildings and spaces.

Living Spaces provides grants to help people improve open spaces in their neighbourhood and create valuable places for the whole community to enjoy.

GreenSpace is a not-for-profit organisation set up to help those committed to the planning, design, management and use of public parks and open spaces.

The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister’s Urban Policy Unit aims to drive forward the sustainable communities' agenda. The Neighbourhood Renewal Unit (NRU) describes the range of programmes (including Neighbourhood Wardens, Neighbourhood Management, New Deal for Communities) currently working at a local level to narrow the gap between deprived neighbourhoods and the rest of the country.

Environmental Campaigns (ENCAMS) is the charity which runs the Keep Britain Tidy campaign. ENCAMS works to improve local environments from right outside your front door, to town centres, local parks, beaches, rivers and marinas.

Living Streets is a major new campaign of The Pedestrians Association, working on practical projects to create safe, vibrant and healthy streets for all.

The Environment Agency regulates waste management through a system of licences. We register and monitor people who transport waste and must be told beforehand if anyone moves potentially dangerous waste (special waste). We advise on waste management methods including waste minimisation. The Agency works closely with other organisations to tackle specific issues such as fly-tipping (dumping waste illegally).
