Fly-tippingFly-tipping is an illegal activity that not only creates a major eyesore but is also potentially hazardous to the environment and to the public.Fly-tipping is defined as ‘the illegal deposit of any waste onto land’, in other words, the dumping or tipping of rubbish onto a site that is not licensed for the purpose. Items frequently fly-tipped are general household waste; larger domestic items like fridges and mattresses; garden refuse and commercial waste such as builders' rubble, clinical waste and tyres. Uncontrolled waste disposal, for example of items such as drums of toxic waste, asbestos sheeting, syringes and used drugs, can pose a public hazard. The act of fly-tipping also undermines the legitimate waste management activities in place, increasing cost by creating the need to invest in additional training, infrastructure and procedures. |
